New Kate Wolf Mendocino Album

Created by Owl Productions

Kate Wolf had a great affinity for the California coast, and she frequently performed in Mendocino County venues in the middle years of her career. With Nina Gerber's help, we sifted through 15 hours of soundboard recordings, resulting in 20 remastered tracks that we feel beautifully represent Kate. We’re particularly delighted about the inclusion of three previously unreleased Kate Wolf songs.

About The Songwriters Part 2

Antonia Lamb: 2-4-D
At Kate’s April 1979 show at Crown Hall in Mendocino, she shared the stage with Luke Breit, one of three poets Kate wrote about in her song Poet’s Heart. The evening was a fundraiser for the Herbicide Initiative, coordinated by Luke. The two swapped poems and songs, including this one by Antonia Lamb, a prolific Mendocino songwriter and banjo player. The herbicide 2,4-D was a component of Agent Orange (used in the Vietnam War), a defoliant that caused cancer, miscarriage and birth defects. This concert was a benefit for Mendocino county residents’ effort to keep timber companies from aerial spraying 2,4-D over thousands of acres of logged-over forest lands.

Lyn Hardy: Lonesome
This song appears on the 1975 album Jay & Lyn: Songs, Ballads & Fiddle Tunes on Philo Records, home to numerous folk artists that influenced Kate, including Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrels, Mary McCaslin, Jim Ringer and Bodie Wagner.

Utah Phillips: Scott's Creek Bluff
As a budding songwriter, Kate discovered Utah Phillip’s music through the recordings of Rosalie Sorrels. Kate eventually became close friends with both. She and Utah toured together and encouraged each other to write and perform. Utah is one of three writers that Kate refers to in her song Poet’s Heart. Way to go backers: we reached 4 of our 10 stretch goals!

Now in addition to the base 10 tracks, every backers' copy of Live In Mendocino will also include:
11. Back Roads
12. Early Morning Melody
13. Everybody's Looking For The Same Thing
14. She Rises Like The Dolphin

Let’s keep reaching for the full 20-track album. Please tell your friends and share this message. 8 days to go!

About The Songwriters Part 1

We thought you might like to learn a little about the seven songwriters that appear on Live In Mendocino. Some Kate knew, some she didn’t, but they all influenced Kate and her music in one way or another. Kate hosted radio shows in Santa Rosa around the time of these recordings, and she introduced her audience to many artists such as these.

Mike Gwinn: Rain Song
When Kate performed Rain Song in Mendocino, she said, “This is a song by a man named Mike Gwinn, who used to have a group called Gabriel Gladstar. He travelled down the coast a few times from Bellingham, Washington.” Rain Song appears on the album A Garden Song by Gabriel Gladstar.

Joe Allison & Milton Estes: 20/20 Vision (and Walking Around Blind)
This song by two Nashville stalwarts was first covered by Gene Autry in 1954, and indicates the breath of music in Kate’s record library.

Hugh Shacklett: Everybody's Looking For The Same Thing
Kate and Hugh met early in her career when Hugh was a member of The Perfect Crime. Kate appeared on their album and often performed Hugh’s songs. Hugh tells the story of being in a bad mood one day and dropping in at Kate’s house. He recalls that after ten minutes Kate said, “You know, I’m not going to waste my afternoon with the likes of you. Let’s write some music.” And this song was born.

The "Groovy" Album Design Becomes…a Free Sticker!

We received great feedback about the “Groovy” album design for the t-shirt reward. So we created a sticker! We’ll send one out for free with every reward, because, well, everyone could use a Kate Wolf Mendocino “groovy" album sticker. These 3” stickers are on durable vinyl. If you’d like extras, simply add $2/sticker to your pledge. Or $10 for 10 stickers (share ‘em with friends). That’ll help us reach those stretch goals too!

“Groovy” album sticker (left) going out free with all rewards. Based on the “groovy” shirt (right) designed by Kate’s granddaughter, Bonnie Kate Wolf. Both available as add-ons.

We Reached Our Campaign Base Goal...Now on to the Stretch Goals to Double the Album!
about 6 years ago – Mon, Apr 23, 2018 at 12:35:07 PM

Thanks to all you amazing backers, we reached our campaign’s base goal of $10,000. Now we know for sure that there will be a new Kate Wolf album this summer! And we’re very excited that the album will include previously unreleased Kate Wolf songs.

So, the next challenges are the 10 $1,000 stretch goals to add 10 more tracks to the album. If the overall campaign reaches $20,000, we’ll double the album! For example, if we reach $11,000, the album will include the song Safe At Anchor. Then there’s 9 more after that. You get the idea, so let's keep the momentum going!

So how are we going to reach all those stretch goals? Spread the word! Also, we just added a new reward to the Kickstarter campaign: a Live In Mendocino t-shirt. Designed by Kate’s granddaughter, Bonnie Kate Wolf, we think it’s really, ahem, “groovy”. The image is 12” in diameter and incorporates the original LP label artwork from Owl Records, which Kate started in 1976. The shirt is soft, 100% cotton, black, and will be available in women’s and men’s sizes S, M, L, XL and 2X. Our screening process dyes the fabric rather than placing a layer of plastic ink on top of the shirt fabric. To add the reward, simply increase your pledge by $25 (per shirt, no limit). When we send out surveys, we’ll ask about styles and sizes.

Well On Our Way to a New Kate Wolf Album!
about 6 years ago – Tue, Apr 03, 2018 at 01:39:43 PM

Dear Backers,

Thanks so much to everyone who has backed our Kate Wolf Mendocino Album campaign! We reached over a quarter of our base goal in just 2 days, which is terrific. Also, Kickstarter just selected us as a "Project We Love"...hooray!

This campaign also has ten $1,000 stretch goals, which, if we achieve them, will double the length of the Live In Mendocino album from 10 tracks to 20 tracks. To illustrate this, here are two compact disc images. The first is what the base goal brings (10 tracks). The second shows the full 20 tracks with the stretch goals.

To help this campaign reach all 20 tracks, please spread the word. Share our Kickstarter with friends, and family, anyone you can think of! Thank you again for your support of Kate’s music.   -Kate's family

Note: final song order and disc artwork will appear later in the campaign.
